Data Backup

Backing up data files is one of the most overlooked aspects of home computing. If disaster strikes at home, household insurance covers replacing your belongings but it can’t replace your memories.

Data Backup

How would that happen?

There are many ways you can unintentionally lose information on a computer: people delete files, a sudden power outage, equipment failure or, at worst, a house fire. The reality is that you might think that you don’t really have anything worth backing up, but what about :

Photos

Photos – this is probably the most important data you could lose. Our pictures are usually the archive of our life and can incluude childhood experiences, places visited, family members and a lifetime of friends

Your Internet Favourites

Internet Favourites – sure, you could probably get all of these back eventually but have you ever thought about how much time that would take and would you remember everything you had saved?

Email Addresses

Email Addresses – these would be a lot harder to recover. You probably have way more email addresses on file in your archive than you would imagine and some of these people you may lose contact with forever

Email Archive

Your Email Archive – not only could losing all of your email archive be an annoyance but it could also potentially be a disaster if there was something really important in there that you needed to refer back to later

Your CV – you never know when you might need this and if you had to put it together again from the beginning rather than simply update it, how long would that take?

Naturally there will be some of this data that you’ll be able to get back but there could also be important files that will be gone for good.

Don't panic!

The good news is that if you backup your data regularly and keep it in a safe place, you can get everything back if something happens to your computer.

We’re asked to rescue lost data quite often.  Our Data Recovery Service can recover data from many types of failure but unfortunately we can’t help when the computer has been stolen or suffered catastrophic hardware damage.

We can advise you on the best way to protect your data, so contact us today. Whether you choose a Storage Server or opt for an internet back up service,  you’ll never need to worry about losing data again.

How do I backup my computer?

We can set up a backup routine on your computer in three different ways, starting with the most cost effective :

  • Good : Connected Hard Drive – by using an external hard drive attached to your computer we can use either commercial or free software to backup your critical data
  • Better : Storage Server – a Storage Server allows the entire household to utilise a central secure storage area to backup and share data
  • Best : Internet (Cloud) based Storage – by using a broadband connection we can set up an automatic secure (and encrypted) backup using the internet

There is a fourth method of backing up to your computer locally but it’s not a method we’d reccomend, as it only protects against a file being deleted and not against actual damage to the computer or laptop.
